The Heroic Journey

Sun Feb 10, 2008, 4:33 AM
I've been reading Practical Greek Magic by Murray Hope. I have a used copy I bought of a book from the 1980's lol. Anyway, It is a very beautiful book that has given me a lot to think about. I have a lot of challenges and changes happening in my life right now. Drawing is helping me so much to get through it all because it gives me a place to put some of these emotions.

Anyway, the book talks about the mythology and legends of ancient Greece in a way that the symbols may apply to modern life. It does not teach how to cast vengeful spells on people, but rather how to become a better person by being inspired by the heroic journeys of old.

I find it interesting that I have been moved to draw dragons so much lately as well as elemental spirits and whatnot. In the old tales, it is always the hero that must face it's monsters and some creatures turn out not to be monsters at all, but guardians in disguise. It is also worth remembering that those heroes were also given tools/weapons/armour that was blessed by the Gods and allowed them to be victorious. Yes, it is true that there were also stories of tragedy and that is life. I, for one, am going to do my best to use the tools given me and trudge ahead and fight for a better life. That is all I can do each day. And I am thankful that I have my drawing to fuel my soul.
